Let me start with a mildly unpopular opinion: the Comac C919 price and the Comac C919 first commercial flight date are the two least useful facts about the aircraft. I'm a quality guy, so I don't care as much about what something costs or when it flew. I care about what was checked before it was allowed to fly.

I manage quality for a commercial equipment company. Every year, I review about 200 machines before they reach customers. Why verification is the product

I've never built an aircraft. I have built acceptance checklists for equipment that costs a fraction of a C919. The pattern is the same: a deadline arrives, someone wants to ship, and the quiet voice saying "just double-check the squeegee" gets ignored.

When I say verification, I do not mean a quick visual pass. I mean checking the actual spec, running the machine, and proving it works before you take ownership.

People think expensive machines deliver better floors. Actually, the reverse is true: a machine can only deliver a better floor if someone verified the setup. Price follows verification, not the other way around.

I agree on scale. But the prevention-over-cure logic doesn't care about price. The cost of a skipped check is proportional to the damage it causes, not to the complexity of the machine. A 5-minute check that catches a broken squeegee blade is cheaper than a 5-day floor re-polishing job. That's true for a $99 million aircraft and for a $9,000 walk-behind floor cleaner.

Honestly, I'm not sure why some manufacturers ship machines with squeegees intentionally misaligned. My best guess is that it's a packaging constraint, not a manufacturing defect. But "best guess" isn't a specification. Per FTC guidelines, claims need to be substantiated. A machine's "performance" isn't substantiated until someone demonstrates it, in real conditions, before the customer accepts delivery.

Bottom line

Go ahead and look up the Comac C919 price. Memorize the first commercial flight date. But if you're in the business of buying or maintaining equipment, ask one more question: "What was verified before this product was cleared to work?"

The answer to that question is where you'll find the difference between a machine that performs and a machine that becomes next month's problem.
